Facing Hunger Foodbank is making a difference in the lives of the communities they serve thanks to grant funding from Toyota Manufacturing and the Stork Impact Partners.
FHFB has been partnering with Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center for several years, to provide their patients Medically Indicated Food Boxes. Geared towards households undergoing cancer treatment or those living with chronic diseases, our MIFB program works to allow the patients acces to self-manage their diet.
With additional funding, thanks to Toyota and Stork, FHFB is now partnering with The Health Kids Inc. organization and their Central Kitchen Food Project to create high protein, prepared, frozen meals that will be directly distributed to the 25 patients we serve at ECCC. We know that a high protein diet is essential to those undergoing cancer treatments, as it helps maintain muscle mass, repair tissue and fight infections. All things necessary to stay healthy during treatment. Every 2 weeks, these 25 patients will receive 10 frozen meals, with the hope that they can use these meals as an easy, yet efficient way to manage their diet after a long day of treatment.
CEO Cindy Kirkhart said that this is a new way for the food bank to be able to help the community.
“It’s incredible to be able to provide another level of care and nutrition to them and support them through this health journey,” Kirkhart said. “They don’t have to worry about cooking. If they don’t feel like cooking, then it’s still going to be a really good meal. What’s better than that -- to have good nutrition and not have to worry about fixing it?”
